Athletes are exposed to many blows throughout their sports lives. These bumps often occur in the mouth area. If the blows resulting from sports accidents exceed a certain resistance, trauma occurs and causes injuries. Dental injuries constitute the majority of injuries in the maxillofacial region in sports accidents. In the researches, the rate of dental injuries among sports injuries is quite high. Impacts to the mouth area can cause displacement or fractures in the jawbone and teeth. The most common trauma cases are close combat sports, football, basketball, skiing and racquet-stick sports.

In sports accidents, the injury is mostly in the upper jaw and usually the upper incisors are damaged. However, injuries in dento-alveolar structures and fractures in facial bones are some of them. Appliances produced to prevent such accidents in sports activities and to protect people from trauma are called ‘mouth guards’.

Mouth guards (protective teethers – athlete’s plates) prevent tooth fractures, tongue-lip and cheek injuries that may occur as a result of trauma. It protects the anterior teeth in impacts from the anterior region and the posterior teeth in impacts to the lower jaw and reduces jaw fractures.

An ideal mouth guard should be easily adaptable to teeth, provide adequate protection, be resistant to tearing, be odorless-tasteless, not make breathing difficult, and be easily cleaned.

There are 3 types of mouth guards;

1) Standard Mouthguards – Protective Mouthguards:

It consists of materials, usually PVC-based, available in various sizes available ready-made.

2) Preservatives Prepared by the Heat-Bite Method:

They are protective plates prepared with a thermoplastic material. Its adaptation and adaptation decrease over time, so its lifespan is short.

3) Custom Made Protectors on the Model:

Intraoral measurements are taken by your dentist. The model is obtained from the measurement taken. According to the prepared model, a soft essix plate with a thickness of approximately 5 mm is prepared. The tooth/mouth guard mouth guard prepared with this method is personal and is the most recommended and most used mouth guard type.
